Well-Equipped - Green Tip

Being well-equipped and knowing what you already have on hand will help you save from buying any unnecessary items this winter season.
This is also a great time to organize an office-wide holiday drive for coats and blankets for the less fortunate while giving co-workers an opportunity to clean out closets and preventing items from going to the landfill. - CT

Once Is Not Enough
Next month is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). Since the program began in 1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined. This is exciting progress, but there are still women who do not take advantage of early detection at all and others who do not get screening mammograms and clinical breast exams at regular intervals.
-Women age 65 and older are less likely to get mammograms than younger women, even though breast cancer risk increases with age.
-Hispanic women have fewer mammograms than Caucasian women and African American women.
-Women below poverty level are less likely than women at higher incomes to have had a mammogram within the past two years.
-Mammography use has increased for all groups except American Indians and Alaska Natives.
“If all women age 40 and older took advantage of early detection methods – mammography plus clinical breast exam – breast cancer death rates would drop much further, up to 30 percent”.
“The key to mammography screening is that it be done routinely – once is not enough.” Schedule your appointment today with your healthcare provider!
For more information about NBCAM, please visit www.nbcam.org. For additional information, please call one of the following toll-free numbers: American Cancer Society, (800) 227-2345, National Cancer Institute (NCI), (800) 4-CANCER, Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, (800) 221-2141.
The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month program is dedicated to increasing public knowledge about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Fifteen national public service organizations, professional associations, and government agencies comprise the Board of Sponsors, who work together to ensure that the NBCAM message is heard by thousands of women and their families.
Show Your Support For Breast Cancer Research
During the months of September and October 2009, CT Jewelry Design.com will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of any sterling silver ribbon charm jewelry or accessories to the American Cancer Society.

Fun In The Sun

Don't miss a spot and make sure you put it on your entire face, nose, ear tips, back of the neck, knees and arms. Don't forget your feet and toes. And for those hard to reach places like your back and shoulders have a friend help. Cover up with a hat and wear sunglasses that block UV light. Long term exposure to UV light can lead to cataracts, so keep those pretty eyes protected. If your not sure whether your sunglasses are adequately blocking UV have them checked by an optometrist.

Buying Pearls on the Internet

Whether you're looking for the “must have” white pearl necklace or a pair of bold black pearl earrings, who can you trust to make an informed decision when shopping on the internet for pearls? How can you be confident when buying from a reputable source? As with shopping for anything else online, here are a few basic safeguards to consider:
Return Policy – A returns policy exceeds the legal minimum 7 working days which demonstrates confidence (10-30 days returns is typical).
Privacy Notice – A good privacy notice is easy to find, easy to read, and provides online visitors the opportunity to make informed decisions about the collection and use of their information.
Contact Information – The website should provide full “Contact Us” details . An address, telephone number as well as a business e-mail address.
Guarantee – A guarantee or warranty for workmanship of the goods (12 months is typical).
Payment Method – Clearly displaying the credit or debit cards accepted.
Shipping Cost – Any shipping or handling cost clearly displayed.
Testimonials – Genuine customer testimonials displayed.
Photos – Large blow-up detail photos of the goods.
CT Jewelry Design.com meets all the above criteria which is displayed on our website and upon request. We're always open to our customers' personal requests and would love to hear from you. Simply contact us at carolyn@ctjewelrydesign.com.
The pearl is the perfect piece of jewelry for any occasion. While there is no right or wrong way to chose pearls, there are a few things you should consider:
Color – While color is a matter of preference, rose or silver/white pearls tend to look best on fair skin types, while cream and gold-tone pearls are flattering to darker complexions.
Luster – The luster of a good-quality pearl should be bright, not dull. Any pearl that looks too chalky or dull indicates low quality.
Surface – Cleanliness of the pearl surface refers to the absence of disfiguring spots, bumps or cracks. A pearl with a clean surface will have a higher value than a spotted, bumpy or cracked one.
Shape – It is very rare to find a perfectly round pearl. While rounder pearls are more valuable, asymmetrical or baroque pearls have a unique charm and are available at a more reasonable cost.
Size – Pearls are measured by their diameter in millimeters. The average pearl sold today are between 7 and 7.5 millimeters. Typically, the larger the pearl, the more valuable it will be.
Akoya Pearls – These are the classic cultured pearls. They are the most lustrous of all pearls and the most expensive.
Freshwater Pearls – These pearls are easily cultivated from freshwater mussels rather than saltwater oysters. They are produced in great abundance and are moderately priced. Their unique shapes and beautiful pastel colors make them perfect gems for those on a budget.
Swarovski Crystal Pearls – While there are many faux pearls on the market, Swarovski crystal pearls are manufactured pearls with the base being an actual crystal bead that has been finished with layers of highly luminous pearlescence. They are considered one of the finest products of their kind in the world.
Remember you get what you pay for, so buyer beware of all those “unbelievable offers”. Pay attention to suppliers who inflate their prices to then reduce prices by 60-70%. This is simply a marketing tool. The best advise is studying and comparing pearls with a reputable e-tailer for your pearl purchase. - CT

What's In A Stone?

Emeralds come in many shades of green, from very bright to a deep green. Unlike other gems, flaws found in Emeralds are actually a sign of it genuineness. The “Emerald Cut” refers to the wide rectangle face with it many sides or facets. When purchasing an Emerald check out the cuts. The exactness of the cut will affect the price of the emerald. A good cut has facets that meet proportionately. - CT

Quick Tips to Keep the Sparkle

To maintain the original luster of the jewelry, we recommend wiping the pieces with a soft non-abrasive silver cloth after removing or at least once per month.

Basic Jewelry Wardrobe Buying Guide

Earring: A must have for every woman are diamond studs to complement dressy to casual clothes. Sparkling earrings with colorful gemstones can also capture the spotlight for that special dinner party.
Bracelets: A few white or yellow gold bracelets and/or silver bracelets are great accessories. They are great for jazzing up a plain blouse or suit. Consider a pearl bracelet with a beautiful clasp.
Necklaces: Choose at least one necklace with a pendant or multiple strands to add interest to open necklines. Diamond or pearl strands never go out of style. Cubic Zirconia (CZ) which comes in all colors is also a beautiful alternative to diamonds for a fraction of the cost.
Extras: Adding a gemstone ring or a watch is always smart and eye catching.

Earth Day and Setting Up a Green Home Office
Earth Day is on April 22nd, an inspiring day of awareness and appreciation for our environment. As you may already know Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, an environmental activist, conceived the idea on a trip he took to Santa Barbara after the terrible oil spill off our coast in 1969. He had been so outraged that he took a leading role in organizing the celebration and then passed a bill to celebrate the earth every year after. You too can take the lead and be inspired to do your “Green” part as a small business owner. Make a difference by considering the following ways to save energy and resources by making environmental choices when setting up your home office.
Purchase Recycled Paper - Paper is typically the number one supply used in any office. Consider how you can reduce, reuse, or recycle paper (or better yet share electronic files with others). You’ll help reduce the number of trees needed to make paper, keep it out of the trash and reduce energy cost.
Electronic Media - Instead of sending newsletters or post cards by mail to advertise consider using an electronic mailing list where customers can opt into for all the important news regarding your company. There’s even an added bonus…you’ll save the cost of postage!
Subscriptions and Junk Mail – Cancel hard-copy subscriptions to newspapers, newsletters, and magazines you can access on line. If you don’t read it, you don’t need it. Then visit Direct Marketing Association at www.dmaconsumers.org/consumerassistance.html and take your name off mailing lists to reduce all that junk mail you've been trashing.
Recycled Furniture - Before you buy new furniture, consider gently used or refurbished furniture. Wood can be painted or stained and you can add some recovered cushions to match your personal decor. If you prefer new, seek out a manufacturer that recycles steel or aluminum in their furniture designs. The choices are many for Eco-friendly desks, chairs and cabinets.
Buy in Bulk and Refillable – Buy pencils and pens that are refillable. They can be refilled over and over again and remember to read the label before you buy to avoid any dangerous toxic inks. Save the environment (and money) from single packages and buy your writing tools in bulk.
Being in charge is probably one of the greatest benefits of small business ownership. The resources and energy saving actions we take as the decision makers can make a big difference in reducing waste and pollution. So remember to make the right environmental choices...reduce, reuse and recycle every day.
Happy Earth Day. - CT
